Modi and Meloni Elevate India–Italy Relations in Rome Talks Focused on Strategic Partnership Expansion

During the talks, both sides reviewed progress and future prospects under the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor, with emphasis on enhancing connectivity and economic integration. Trade between the two nations, currently valued at 16.77 billion US dollars, was also highlighted as a core pillar of the expanding partnership.

The discussions further covered critical sectors including defence cooperation, clean energy transition, and artificial intelligence, with both leaders aligning on a forward-looking Joint Strategic Action Plan for the period 2025–2029. The framework is designed to deepen institutional collaboration and expand strategic engagement across emerging global challenges.

Beyond formal negotiations, the visit featured notable cultural and symbolic moments. Prime Minister Modi visited the Colosseum, while members of the Indian diaspora in Italy performed traditional Indian musical raags, reflecting cultural outreach and shared appreciation. The leaders also exchanged light-hearted interactions, including Prime Minister Meloni’s expression of gratitude for Indian toffee, adding a personal dimension to the diplomatic visit. Their public rapport has been informally referred to as “Melodi,” reflecting the visible warmth between the two leaders.
